Warning Sign

ELM-WNS-12
Recommended Element

Warning Sign

A sign alerting drivers to an upcoming hazard or changed condition, such as a curve, a crossing, a narrowing roadway, or a stop ahead, advising caution without carrying the direct legal force of a regulatory sign.

Why this pattern exists

A warning sign gives a driver advance notice of a condition they need to react to, a curve tighter than expected, a crossing they might not anticipate, filling the gap between a road’s physical design and a driver’s real-time awareness of what is coming. This pattern exists to document its distinct advisory function and placement logic, separate from a regulatory sign’s enforceable message.12

Key considerations

Regulatory Sign (ELM-RGS-11), Guide Sign (ELM-GDS-13) (related sign categories); Rumble Strip (ELM-RMS-07) (often paired ahead of a hazard this sign warns of)
