Bike Parking Corral
An on-street, curbside cluster of bike racks, typically installed in place of a single car parking space, providing multiple bike parking spots in the footprint one vehicle would otherwise occupy.
Why this pattern exists
Sidewalk-mounted bike racks compete with pedestrian clear-path space and other furnishings, and demand at popular destinations often exceeds what a sidewalk can hold; converting curbside vehicle space to bike parking solves both problems at once, at a much lower space cost per bike than a car per space. This pattern exists to document that specific curbside conversion, distinct from sidewalk-mounted racks documented at the Element scale.12
Key considerations
- Physical protection from adjacent travel lane traffic (wheel stops, bollards, or a raised curb) should be provided, since the corral sits where a vehicle used to be
- Placement should preserve sightlines at nearby crosswalks and driveways, not introduce a new sight-obstruction where one did not exist
- Capacity should reflect observed or projected demand at the specific destination, not a flat citywide default
