Bench
ELM-BCH-31 Recommended Element
Bench
A fixed or semi-fixed seating element installed along a sidewalk, plaza, or transit stop, providing a place to rest independent of any specific transit or commercial function.
Why this pattern exists
Seating in the public realm extends how long and how comfortably people, particularly older adults, people with mobility limitations, and caregivers, can use a street or public space; this pattern exists to document siting and design considerations distinct from the seating that might be built into a transit shelter or plaza specifically.
Key considerations
- Placement should account for shade, sightlines, and proximity to activity; an isolated bench in full sun with nothing to observe sees little use
- Should not obstruct the required pedestrian clear path of travel on the sidewalk it is placed along1
- Design elements to prevent unwanted extended use (frequently discussed as "hostile architecture") raise genuine equity concerns and should be weighed carefully against basic comfort and accessibility for all users
