#Why this pattern exists
Seating in the public realm extends how long and how comfortably people, particularly older adults, people with mobility limitations, and caregivers, can use a street or public space; this pattern exists to document siting and design considerations distinct from the seating that might be built into a transit shelter or plaza specifically.
#Key considerations
- Placement should account for shade, sightlines, and proximity to activity; an isolated bench in full sun with nothing to observe sees little use
- Should not obstruct the required pedestrian clear path of travel on the sidewalk it is placed along
- Design elements to prevent unwanted extended use (frequently discussed as "hostile architecture") raise genuine equity concerns and should be weighed carefully against basic comfort and accessibility for all users
