Drinking Fountain
ELM-DRF-33 Situational / Discouraged Element
Drinking Fountain
A fixed water fountain installed in the public right-of-way or an adjacent public space, providing free public access to drinking water, sometimes paired with a lower-height accessible basin or a pet-watering feature.
Why this pattern exists
Public drinking water access supports comfort and public health, particularly in hot climates or along longer pedestrian corridors like trails and greenways, and its absence disproportionately affects people without ready access to bottled water. This pattern exists to document siting and accessibility considerations for this amenity.
Key considerations
- Accessible height and reach range must be provided, not just a single standard-height basin1
- Freeze-proof design or seasonal shutoff is necessary in climates with winter freezing
- Best sited near high pedestrian dwell locations (plazas, trailheads, transit hubs), rather than distributed evenly regardless of use pattern
