Bicycle Boulevard / Neighborhood Greenway

A Local street where through car traffic is discouraged by design, while walking and bicycling are treated as the primary through movements.

Applies at these density tiers: Suburban Compact Urban Core

#Design speed

Local streets carry a hard 20 mph maximum, with no exceptions.1 Design speed is always set equal to the posted speed limit, so the roadway is self-enforcing rather than relying on signage alone.2

Caution

Stroads, a street and arterial road hybrid, are an explicit avoid pattern within the Commonway System.

#Intersection treatment

The default Local-to-Collector intersection treatment is a continuous sidewalk, carrying the pedestrian path across the intersection at a consistent grade and giving priority to people walking.3

Roundabouts are the default intersection control across road-type pairings; traffic signals are treated as a last resort requiring documented justification.

Unsourced claim

The specific crash-reduction figure for continuous sidewalks at this intersection type still needs a source before publication.
