Flow-Through Planter

A contained, structured planting box with an engineered soil and drainage layer that captures and filters stormwater runoff before releasing it through an underdrain, used where space or soil conditions do not allow for an open bioswale.

#Why this pattern exists

Many streetscape contexts, a narrow sidewalk zone, a site with contaminated or compacted native soil, cannot accommodate an open bioswale’s footprint or infiltration requirements; a flow-through planter delivers similar filtration benefits within a contained structure suited to tighter or more constrained sites. This pattern exists to document that structural alternative.

#Key considerations

  • Underdrain design and outlet connection need to be planned as part of the site’s overall drainage system, not treated as self-contained
  • Maintenance access (removing debris, replacing plants, checking the underdrain) should be planned for at installation, since a neglected planter loses function quickly
  • Best suited to tight or constrained streetscape zones where an open bioswale’s footprint is not available
