Radial

A network topology in which routes converge toward and radiate outward from a central point, frequently supplemented by circumferential (ring) routes connecting the radial spokes at varying distances from the center.

#Why this pattern exists

Radial networks arose historically and organically around a defined city center, and remain genuinely efficient for travel oriented toward that center; but the same convergence that makes downtown travel efficient also concentrates traffic at the center and underserves travel between non-downtown points. This pattern documents the topology and its common hybrid forms.1

#Key considerations

  • Distinguish pure Radial from Radial-Circumferential (radial routes connected by one or more ring roads) and Radial-Grid (a radial system superimposed on an underlying grid); each has different tradeoffs
  • Route convergence near the center requires deliberate capacity and intersection design, since multiple high-volume routes meeting at or near one point is a well-documented source of congestion
  • As travel patterns shift away from single-downtown-focused trips toward more distributed origin-destination pairs, a purely radial system increasingly underserves the majority of trips
