The below-grade excavated and engineered soil volume, either an individual pit or a shared linear trench connecting multiple planting locations, providing root space and often structural soil to support street tree growth beneath a sidewalk or paved surface.

#Why this pattern exists

A tree’s long-term health depends far more on below-grade soil volume and quality than on what is visible at the surface; a standard small pit surrounded by compacted pavement subgrade starves a tree’s root system, while a shared trench connecting multiple pits dramatically increases available soil volume. This pattern exists to document that structural, below-grade design distinct from the visible tree itself.
